The year is ending soon and many are scrambling to assemble a list of New Years resolutions.
There may be new resolutions, but often people’s lists include a few stand-by resolutions that are the same every year. Lose weight, eat healthy, and get your finances in order, etc. If that last one is on your list, however, you should take a few steps to make sure you’re ready to really meet your resolution. One important tip? Ordering a free credit report.
Here are a couple of things being recommended to remember when ordering your free credit report. First, make sure that you are really getting a free report. Some places will charge for the reports by claiming the report is free and then tacking on hidden charges. You could end up paying a monthly fee that you didn’t even realize you were approving. Instead, make sure that you go to the actual site provided (annualcreditreport.com) by the Federal Trade Commission. Next, when you receive the report, go through it and look for any discrepancies, such as any charges that you paid off that didn’t get removed from your free credit report.
Also, keep together all your financial information. Remember that a free credit report is just one part of the whole; keep anything you need to review your financial status (such as bills, bank information, credit card reports) together in one place. If they are scattered, reassemble the pieces. Talk to your bank if you need to.
